Institute of Texan Cultures
  • "Tusks! Ice Age Mammoths and Mastodons," an exhibit featuring fossils, artifacts, murals and graphic videos, tells the story of the extinct relatives of modern elephants that roamed North America - including what would become Texas - until the end of the last Ice Age 10,000 years ago. Through Jan. 3, 2010.

    McNay Art Museum
  • "The Harmon and Harriet Kelley Collection of African American Art: Works on Paper" includes almost 100 prints, drawings and watercolors by African American artists, dating from the late 19th century to the present. The exhibit features work by Elizabeth Catlett, Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence and contemporary artists Alison Saar and Robert Colescott, spanning more than a century of American art. Through Jan. 3, 2010.

    San Antonio Botanical Garden

  • "Big Bugs," larger-than-life insects constructed from natural materials by artist David Rogers, are on display throughout the botanical garden. A Praying Mantis, damselfly, dragonfly, lady bug, spider and web, assassin bug, grasshopper and three ants stand as tall as 25 feet and have wingspans up to 17 feet wide. Through Dec. 6.
  • "Model Trains" exhibit is on display Nov. 21-Dec. 13.

    San Antonio Children's Museum

  • "PowerBall Hall" is a fast-paced gravity-defying exhibit that teaches kids about simple cause and effect theories and principles of physics. Young visitors can feed balls into clear pneumatic tubes and watch them make their way to a holding tower. When the tower is full, it rains balls inside the museum.
  • "H-E-B Kids' Market," an interactive play grocery store and café, features all the play food items you would find in your neighborhood grocery store. Kids can learn about nutrition as they plan their shopping trip or serve up a meal in the Kids' Café.
  • "Texas Treasure Cave and Wild Texas Spring" is a kid-friendly version of the Edwards Aquifer in which children can create a thunderstorm, slip down a slide into the aquifer, find out what it's like to be a raindrop, listen to a bat and explore an underground cave.

    San Antonio Museum of Art

  • "Culinary Delights" features the photographs of nationally acclaimed photographer David Halliday. The artist lives and works in New Orleans, where he began his career as a chef. Although he has produced landscape and portrait images, this exhibit focuses on still life compositions using food. Through Feb. 21, 2010.

    San Antonio Zoo

  • "Africa Live!" boasts up-close views of hippopotamus, Nile crocodiles, giant bullfrogs, Egyptian cobras, giant elephant shrews and more. Visitors experience the plants and animals of Africa three months after the seasonal rains, including animals from Lake Tanganyika and Lake Malawi that can be viewed through underwater windows.

    Witte Museum

  • "Circus Folk: Secrets Behind the Big Top" reveals what goes on behind-the-scenes in traveling tent shows. Four sections cover every aspect of creating these magical spectacles. "Life in a Traveling Village" focuses on life on the road. "The Circus Family" delves into the special ties that blend business, love and family relationships. "Getting Physical" demonstrates how athleticism and strength are required in all areas of the circus, and "Rules of the Ring" explains the rules for work, play and travel that apply to the circus family. Through Feb. 14, 2010. $3 surcharge in addition to museum admission.
  • H-E-B Science Treehouse sports a new addition, "Movie It! A Game of Action". The interactive light-space station spotlights wellness and physical activity through a 10' X 10' lighted gaming floor. Nine game choices include Dodgeball, Memory Buster, Musical Squares and Jump Style. Visitors can play individually or compete with others, track their points and try to improve. Also, the H.E.Buddy SkyCycle is an outdoor bicycle ride 14 feet in the air. The ride, on a 40-foot cable, features a large weight suspended underneath to teach young riders the principles of counterbalance and center of gravity.
